Walk-Along for Lupus 2015

November 3, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

East Rockaway High School students walked to help find a cure for Lupus on Oct. 18 at Eisenhower Park.

This is the seventh year East Rockaway High School’s team Jennifer’s Circle has participated in the event. The team, which was organized by teacher Joyce Loftus, consisted of many seventh-graders, as well as students from the Builders Club and National Honor Society.

Students earned community service hours and experienced the wonderful feeling of helping others. The team has raised approximately $1,000 and continues to collect donations.

Loftus expressed her gratitude to school district bus driver Jimmy Lores, who graciously donated his time, for the fourth straight year, to transport 30 students to the event. She also thanked Robert Kennedy, co-adviser to the National Honor Society, who volunteered his time to ride on the bus with the students.

Run Against Drugs

November 3, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

In conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, students in Deauville Garden West Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in the school’s Run Against Drugs on Oct. 28.

Leading up to the run, students in kindergarten through fifth grade learned about the importance of making healthy choices and the negative effects of drugs and alcohol during their physical education classes. Following the quarter-mile run, students signed the Run Against Drugs banner and received a Red Ribbon Week-themed pencil provided by the PTA.

Briarcliff Athletes ‘Make Strides’ Toward a Cure

November 2, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

Briarcliff HS athletes helped raise funds and participated in the American Cancer Society’s annual walk.

Varsity and junior varsity athletes rallied on Oct. 18 to participate in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Manhattanville College.

“We had coaches and athletes from the varsity field hockey and junior varsity volleyball teams participate this year,” said physical education coordinator A.J. Thau, who spearheads the effort each year.

In addition to participating in the walk, athletes and Briarcliff High School faculty members raised funds to donate to the American Cancer Society as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams each hosted a “pink” match, during which they hosted bake sales to raise additional funds. In total, Briarcliff Manor Union Free School District students, staff and families donated $1,726.55 to the American Cancer Society.

“It was another successful year of raising funds for a worthy cause,” said Thau. “The girls have a great understanding of the importance of showing support in the fight against breast cancer.”

Sport Support for Pink

October 30, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s girls varsity field hockey, volleyball and soccer teams held separate fundraisers during select home games in the month of October.

The girls varsity soccer team and head coach Nick Lorenzen, along with junior varsity coach Danielle Poletti, sponsored their annual Kicks for Cancer game in a 4-2 win over Bay Shore on Oct. 9. Playing for a special cause this year, the funds were donated to Siearah Rodriguez, a Copiague high school senior who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

The varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams, along with coach John Sack, hosted a Dig Pink match against Smithtown East on Oct. 14. Dig Pink is a national event sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation to educate the public about breast

cancer and to help eradicate this illness. The teams collectively raise more than $400 for the foundation.

Additionally, the field hockey team and their coach, Patricia Stein, raised funds during their game against North Babylon on Oct. 19. The team raised more than $70 through cupcake, snacks and t-shirts sales.
